Service description (EN)

New home? Register online.

Anyone who has moved into a new home must register as soon as possible. This also applies to changes of address within the city. According to the Federal Registration Act, registration must take place within 14 days after a move. Deregistration at the previous place of residence is not required.

With electronic residence registration, the registration of your new residence is done digitally and you can save yourself a trip to the office.  You notify the authority of your new residence via the online service and can also update your ID card or eID card.

To use the online service, you need to set up a user account via the online ID function. The easiest way to use the online ID card function is via smartphone. To do so, install the AusweisApp2. Also have your 6-digit personal PIN ready.

The electronic residence registration:

The electronic residence registration is a nationwide service of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Homeland. In the current expansion stage, re-registration within a municipality is possible in all municipalities that are already connected. The first to be able to use the service are persons over 18 years of age, unmarried, without minor children.

After you are logged in with your user account, you can start the online service. You will receive information on data protection and enter the address of your new home. The online service directs you to the AusweisApp2. Once you have identified yourself, you will be shown the data that has been stored about you in the population register for verification purposes. You have the option to make settings for the transfer of your registration data.

Furthermore you specify the date you moved into your new apartment. If you are renting, for example, information about your landlord is also required. You will find this information in your housing provider confirmation (Wohnugnsgeberbestätigung).

Before you finally send your application to the relevant registration authority, you can check your registration data once again. A summary of your data is available for download in the online service and will also be sent as a PDF to the mailbox of your user account.

Your data will be checked and processed at the relevant registration office. As soon as this is done, you will automatically receive a letter by mail with a numerical code to your new address.

Call up the service again, authenticate yourself and enter the code. By entering the code in the online service, you confirm that this is your new address. Once the code has been processed further by the registration office, you will receive a message in your user account mailbox. Now you can complete your residence registration.

A tamper-proof digital registration confirmation with an electronic seal is available in the online service. To update your address data on the ID card, the online service directs you once again to the ID card app2, where it updates the address data stored on the chip of the ID card.

The new address stickers will arrive automatically by postal letter from Bundesdruckerei once the online service has been completed. These are provided with a special security code.
